Volunteers Needed at Fire Department

Turkey-Creek-e1292369822290http://www.witn.com/home/headlines/TONIGHT-AT-6-Fighting-Fire-345999502.htmlThere’s a need for more volunteer firefighters both nationwide and here in the east. Just this month, the Bear Creek Volunteer Fire Department merged with Onslow County due to a lack of man power.

Volunteering is not an easy job, but those who do this work say there is nothing more rewarding.

“There’s no better feeling than knowing that you did something to help someone and you didn’t do it for nothing in return, but because you cared about the individual,” says Chief Ricky Hardison of Turkey Creek Volunteer Fire & Rescue. “And that’s what makes the volunteer. They give of themselves asking nothing in return.”

Onslow County has 19 volunteer fire departments and more than 400 volunteers who go through rigorous training.

“The thrill of helping people. It’s an adrenaline rush that no other can please,” says Adam Ketchum with the Black Swamp volunteer department.

Some volunteers said calls are now coming in more frequently, requiring more of their time. Many departments are in need of recruits.

It’s also more than just fighting fire. There is paperwork and other moving parts that make each station run. One chief said, “I have volunteers that range from 18 to 86. There’s a job for everyone to do.”
